Default Energy Manipulation

How important is energy manip in high level gvg(top 100)? I am leaning towards buying a set of -5 long and recurve bows to help against Energy Drain. Is this a reasonable thing to do? I have only gvged as a warrior, never as other classes. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

i think that any ranger build demands good energy. right now i cant think of 1 that doesnt require minimum of 10 expertise.

Would you suggest me buying a negative energy set then? One that I would wear constantly. I would only wear normal 15>50 gear if i desperetly need additional energy.

Just wear 15>50 gear, wear druids and have points in expertise around +10 atleast. With this you should never have to worry about energy. Plus mesmer are most likey to drain monk or other casters during gvg.

I agree...

I play Mesmers (as well as Rangers and a bunch of other classes ) And I really find that I always go after the Necro or Monk (depending on group setup and my team) because its usually more useful. The only times Ill go for the Ranger/Warrior is if they are in my sights and getting on my nerves. Seriously though, Mesmer's main targets are big spell casters. Ele's, Monks, Necros, etc... not saying you'll never get targetted by a Mesmer because for sure you will but I would just say stick to the 15^50 set and Druids armor and you'll be fine. Thats all I bother with.

it just depends on what your doing. i think the -5 weapons are great. for instance, the other day i was trying the r/w melandru's resiliance build and had my -5 energy sword out, a mesmer casts ether lord on me and i have like 12 other hexes or conditions on me so i didn't take notice until it was too late, then i switch weapons and activate melandru's resiliance just in time to save me and ended up killing the mesmer and warrior that were left

the build im referring to: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s....php?t=3043774

I wouldn't reccomend a -5e Bow; if you are switching down energy sets on a Ranger it will probably be to shift Malaise. Malaise is fairly common in Hex builds, and will not generally be used on Monks who will already have negative energy sets. It is also quite effective against Rangers, who rely skills that cost energy to do anything and generally don't have any solid energy management apart from Expertise.

If you are switching down to shift Malaise, it will only be for a second to drop your energy pool. In which case you will get more use out of a -5e sword or axe, and a -2e focus. This gives you an even lower energy pool; to shift Malaise earlier.

However seeing as Rangers don't have bonus energy on their normal sets (unlike staves/focus items) the benefit you gain from focus swapping down is minimal; seven energy as opposed to seventeen.

So in short; It may be worthwhile getting yourself a -7e set just incase, but it really isn't something you should be worried about.

^^ You could also get a +5 energy Bow. That'd give you a bigger swing when you switched back from your -5 set.

And can't you switch out armor sets as well. That'd give you a larger pool of energy to play with.

IMO -5 energy sets arn't actually very "important" for a ranger. And besides, if you DO want a -5 energy set... your better off getting a sword/off-hand with -10 energy total anyway.

And besides, like valk said, in high-level GvG, shutting down a ranger isn't very important. Whats more important is keeping their monk down. Even if you DO get drained, expertise will bring you back in no time. One of the greatest advantages a ranger has, is the ability to use skills, even with less than 5 energy.
